Subsidized Internet

A few days ago the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved subsidizing internet for the poor. This is a major step towards free internet, at least for the poor. With more of our lives depending on the internet not having it is disadvantageous to say the least. Many children from poor families can not even submit their homework online because they have no access to the internet. Some people can not get work done without the internet. Paying for an internet plan is monthly and for poorer families affordable. The FCC plans to change this but subsidizing these households.
Not everyone is for the program though. Based on a previous program the lifeline program the opposition claims that the previous program was not tightly regulated and allowed frauds to happen. They wanted a lower budget cap so loses will be minimized. I don't know how many frauds occurred but the need of these poor families definitely supersede that. Giving a poor family internet is also giving them a chance. To not even be able to hand in homework is a horrible first step in a child's future career. I can imagine this leading to devaluing school and dropping out later on.
Personally I am all for this plan and the I hope that the program will continue to grow in the future. The need for internet is only grow and those without it will become more disadvantaged. This program will lessen this gap in this age of the Internet.
