Modernists vs the Impressionists

Essentially, it was a symbolic and emotive way of painting, evident in the work of Cezanne, Gauguin, and Van Gough. Here the artist would try to capture the subjective qualities of an image rather than the impressions of light in a scene, as seen in in Impressionist works. The Post-Impressionists not only veered away from traditional methods of painting, they also removed the constraints of Impressionists works by placing more of an emphasis on the formal qualities of their composition.
