Essentially, it
was a symbolic and emotive way of painting, evident in the work of Cezanne,
Gauguin, and Van Gough. Here the artist would try to capture the subjective
qualities of an image rather than the impressions of light in a scene, as seen
in in Impressionist works. The Post-Impressionists not only veered away from
traditional methods of painting, they also removed the constraints of
Impressionists works by placing more of an emphasis on the formal qualities of
their composition.
