Why Deadpool is the Most Important Movie Marvel Has Made Yet

Deadpool released in early 2016 to critical acclaim. The film made over $754 million, and broke the record for the highest grossing R-Rated film of all time. This was a huge achievement for Marvel, and taught them a lesson they probably should have learned some time ago.

Deadpool was in my personal opinion the best movie that Marvel has released, not only just for the entertainment value, but for how well they treated the IP. There was wonderful fan service, excellent writing that really made you feel like you were living out an issue of a Deadpool comic, and Ryan Reynolds was born to play the role of Deadpool. Even with all these things it did right were not the most important aspect of the film. The most important aspect of the film was simply that it didn't hold back.

Deadpool as a character is crude, violent, obnoxious, and his comics are full of gore and lowbrow but clever humor. Marvel took a risk with the film when deciding to allow the blood and the gore and the sexual content, but it was a necessary risk. The waters needed to be tested to see how the public would react to an R-rated Marvel film. Now with it's massive success, Marvel has learned the important lesson of not underestimating their fans, and that they will show up to the theatre no matter what the film is rated.

Marvel has always had very humanistic writing, thanks to the talent of the man himself, Stan Lee. Marvel has a pantheon of dark and gritty storylines they can use, and now that Deadpool has been as successful as it was, they are definitely going to open up to more adult content in their films. This is going to allow them to appeal to an even broader audience, and I believe it will help the stigma of comic book and superhero movies as "childish". There are a lot of interesting and dark stories in Marvel's repertoire, and Deadpool has opened up the floodgates for a whole new wave of Marvel films.
