Media - Harm or Help?
Every person is fairly involved when it comes to news. Some have only one source that they rely on entirely for all of their news, while others are continually adding new news sources to their repertoire. However, one major problem is that quite often, most of the media sources are all addressing the same problems, giving headlines to things that are not important in the grand scheme of things, while those things that need attention are left in the dark. Of course, the media outlets have every right to be doing this, because of the freedom of the press. They are allowed to publish whatever bias they want about whatever topic they want and it would still be legal. The problem becomes when so many news outlets are talking about inconsequential things that it actually becomes difficult to find news outlets discussing the things that matter. For instance, there was an oil spill in the amazon rain forest in Peru recently. Hear about it? Probably not. Not only was there one, but there were two, both in the same area, totaling approximately 3000 barrels of oil. The media, though, didn't really speak too much about it, instead covering it up with stories about celebrities. Thousands of other stories just like this one exist, unspoken of, simply because the media thinks that America as a people isn't interested. Plus, I'm sure that their silence is greatly appreciated by the oil companies (and other such groups) that are responsible for the messes and are trying to cover up their mistakes quietly and cheaply. So next time you look at that article about Miley Cyrus twerking on the newest boy, remember that theirs probably something more important just under the surface if you look harder.
