As technology advances and society integrates with technology more mechanical door knobs will become sometime of the past. With electronic locks to secure our home and key cards to access it are we increasing our security or decreasing it. Right now breaking into homes with lockpicking is an easy task for many lock pickers but in the future with electronic doors they will be out of a job. That doesn't mean you are safe though because in place of them door hackers will exists instead. So maybe just electronic locks won't be enough and we will use finger prints and retina scans. Again one can argue because it is electronic this can be bypassed. So what am I getting at?
Security is a funny issue because how secure something is really depends on the method you use to secure it and the time period it is. A lockpick might not work on an electronic door but a computer would not hack a mechanical door as well. We are always striving to improve security because the older security is the less secure it is, but at some point the older securities might be more secure than the latest technology. All of the security issues will show itself later on and the companies responsible for the electronic lock will have to fix them. Meanwhile I am going to stick with my mechanical locks.
For the iris scans and finger print scans I would use them just because I think they are cool. The only problem I see is that it might be annoying to iris scan every time I need something done. I will probably use it on locks that I don't use often. If the finger print scanner can be used in a door knob I wouldn't mind using it. There is always a need for a backup in case you can't use your finger or your eye. New technology and security might be more secure but it can also be what locks you out.
