Facebook and VR

Recently at Facebook's F8 Developer Conference, Mike Schroepfer did a demo on how Facebook could use VR. The first action that he showed was the ability to enter a 360 degree photo. By grabbing a photo that was in the form a sphere and then pushing it towards the face, it makes the user see the photo in 360 degrees, like what it currently does in Facebook. Honestly, this doesn't seem too new or interesting because it is the exact same as it currently is. Instead of clicking and dragging to look around, the user would tilt his/her head to look around, which is not amazing. The next action was the "VR selfie" in which a selfie was taken with the VR avatar. They had a VR selfie stick and used it to take pictures of their avatars with the background as the 360 degree photo they were currently using and then being able to discard it or upload to Facebook. This is interesting, but and it seems fun. The only thing that somewhat annoys me is that they are currently using the VR avatar, which is the shape of the head and the hands. There is always the possibility of upgrading it by uploading a picture to use as the face and maybe for the hands as well. Another feature was using a "pencil" to draw and then something such as a tie and then applying it to the avatar. This function also seems fun, but also is somewhat risky as some inappropriate things might be drawn. Also, without the ability to see the avatar, application of an object is difficult. There is also the function of applying a "mask" which just seems to change the avatar's color, which is basic in my opinion. Since Facebook is tinkering with the idea to apply VR to Facebook, new possibilities are introduced and allow for new and interesting interactions with friends, but currently it just seems like a Skype that allows for you to take pictures with friends and drop a background.
