Over the years there has been an increasing demand on phones that are larger. The tiny convenient flip-phones were replaced by a bigger smartphone and the smartphone with an even bigger smartphone. I understand the flip phone to smartphone enlargement as it is necessary to store all that new tech into the phone but what about next. Flip phone's main purpose was to call and maybe send text messages but a smartphone is different. The idea of a smartphone is best described to me as a miniature computer. I mean computer as in personal computer and laptops. They also offer a novelty, that is being able to touch your screen. This is where the larger smartphone screens come into play.
The user wants to be able to directly interact with the phone and this would obviously be easier if the screen was larger. More than that are the apps being put out. These apps have been tailored for a specific size range. If the smartphone you are using is too small maybe it is time to get the newer larger one. This will then lead to more apps being created for the larger phones and leave the smaller smartphones in the dust. Now, this is all great but what are the side-effects of have larger smartphones.
I don't know about you but it is really uncomfortable to have your smartphone in jeans especially if it is tight. Sooner or later you get used to that cramped feeling but there is one thing I don't get used to. If my jeans are tight and I sit down I have this fear that my phone will snap and just break. It has not happened to me before and I trust the designers to have made the phone strong enough, but that fear is always lingering on the back of my mind. Also the need to use the smartphone with two hands. On a flip-phone I remember being able to operate the entire phone with one hand just pressing the buttons. On a smartphone however accessing some apps on the left side of my screen is harder then my right. This problem applies to typing as well if the phone is turned horizontally. I believe the industry is still trying to find that just-right size that will suit most of the consumers needs and I will wait for it to come out.
