Yesterday night in class we
learned and watched videos about the newest (and coolest) technology. I really
enjoyed last nights’ class when we watched the video starring Glen Keane and
his famous drawings with Disney. Using The Vive, a shot documentary was created
called “Step into The Page”. This brief video was short yet amazing and
inspiring. It showed how Glen Keane was able to transform his Disney drawings
into three dimensional, live, drawings. In the documentary, the videographer was able to capture Glen
sketching life-sized drawings of Ariel, from The Little Mermaid, and Beast,
from Beauty and the Beast, using the HTC Vive headset and
the Tilt Brush app, which is owned by Google. During the
course of drawing these characters from the movies, Keane was actually able to
walk around 3D designs to add the final touches that he thought necessary. This
invention creates a whole new world (pun intended) for animators and
illustrators alike. This changes the way that animators create their drawings.
It changes the way they edit and add final touches that they never thought they
needed. It changes the process of sketching because you can finally see
different angles and perspectives that one never thought possible when drawing
on a flat piece of paper. Keane actually says in the
video” The door for the imagination is open a little wider”. This statement is very true with the new HTC
Vive. As an artist, this excites me. The boundaries that are the edges of the
piece of paper are no longer there. He says at the end “This is sculptural
drawing”, and I am excited to see what comes next of him and the Disney movie
organization.
